Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are paper-thin shells of porcelain or composite resin bonded to the front of your permanent teeth. Veneers make your smile whiter and more symmetrical. What’s more, they cover up minor imperfections that don’t respond to other types of treatment.

Some people get one or two veneers, but the Volterra Dental Comprehensive and Aesthetic Dentistry team recommends getting at least six. That’s because an even number allows for a more balanced smile.

What types of issues can veneers help correct?

The team at Volterra Dental Comprehensive and Aesthetic Dentistry uses veneers to correct various oral imperfections, including:

  • Broken and chipped teeth
  • Severe discoloration
  • Uneven coloring
  • Smaller-than-average teeth
  • Pointy teeth
  • Unusually shaped teeth

You might also benefit from veneers if you have spaces between some of your teeth.

What is the process for getting veneers?

At Volterra Dental Comprehensive and Aesthetic Dentistry, getting veneers takes two visits about a week apart.

First veneers visit

At your first visit, your provider conducts an oral exam and takes 3D X-rays. Then, they numb your mouth with an anesthetic and carefully prepare your teeth to receive the veneers. Your provider removes a thin layer of enamel from each tooth and takes impressions of your teeth.

Your provider sends your impressions to a dental lab that manufactures a set of veneers designed for your smile.

Second veneers visit

About a week later, when the lab finishes your veneers, you return to Volterra Dental Comprehensive and Aesthetic Dentistry. Your provider lines up the veneers with your teeth and bonds them in place. Then, they polish them and provide care instructions.

What is recovery like after getting veneers?

After getting your veneers, there’s no recovery period or downtime. You can return to work and other activities right away.

To keep your veneers in optimal condition, the Volterra Dental Comprehensive and Aesthetic Dentistry team recommends brushing twice daily, flossing regularly, and visiting the office twice a year for an oral exam and professional dental cleaning. By following these guidelines, veneers can last 12-15* years or longer.
